Welcome back Cedar Class! I hope you’ve all had a enjoyable and restful summer. I am sure you are looking forward to being juniors, settling into your new classroom and playground. This academic year is going to be full of fun challenges, I hope you are as excited about the year ahead as I am!
We are very lucky to be welcoming Mrs Gilbody into the classroom who knows us all very well and is looking forward to working with us all in Cedar Class this year.
Our topic for this term is the Romans, please feel free to do any research at home on this topic and bring in any items of interest to class.
We have adopted a new Maths scheme of work across the school this year which places a larger emphasis on ‘Mastery.’ In other words, we want children to know we are ALL capable of doing maths and embrace maths as a highly useful tool that makes our lives richer, easier and more efficient. In term 1 our focus will be numbers up to 1000, there will be a focus on teaching number and applying Maths through problem solving.
Now we are juniors we will be having weekly times tables tests. We will be using the children’s secure knowledge of 2 times tables to learn the 3, 4 and 8 times tables. Your continuing support with times tables will benefit your child’s mathematical learning and will support them in identifying multiples of these numbers.
This term, our writing will be inspired by a combination of Roman myths, poetry and stories. As always, we will be using many different styles of writing which will include letters, character descriptions, stories and many more.
We will also be looking at homophones for example to and two. There are so many, I wonder how many you and your child can share!
Our science topic for this term is forces and magnets. Mrs Atkinson, our specialist Science teacher, will be delivering Science this year.
In RE this term we will be learning about Judaism and key figures within the religion.
For PE please ensure your child has a full fitting PE kit in school at all times. This is to include a plain PE t-shirt (white or house coloured), shorts (blue/black) and black or white trainers. Also, if your child wears tights to school, please could you provide a pair of socks in their kit bag too. Please could you also ensure that long hair is tied back on PE days and no jewellery is to be worn at all. We want to promote an ‘Olympian’ ethos and children need to take kit and uniform very seriously – we will be speaking to you directly if kit is deemed insufficient. For this term, Cedar Class will have PE on Tuesday and Friday. Half the Class will be participating in swimming on Fridays, with the other half will participate in term 2.
You may have guessed, our topic for the term is Romans! We are planning a Roman themed day, on Friday 25th November, which will include; dressing up (costumes at the ready!), cooking, games, a gallery of artwork, marching and many more fun, Roman themed, activities.
We are also planning a trip but more information will follow.
Throughout term 1 and 2, the children will be making Roman shields and creating mosaic artwork.
French will be taught every Tuesday by Madame West.
Music, we are lucky to have a specialist Music teacher, Mr Jaggard, who will come and work with the children every Wednesday morning.
As always, I would encourage all parents to read with their child as often as possible. While the children’s fluency of reading is improving, I would also like to focus on comprehension. It is important to ask questions about the text, characters and events within the text.
Timetable tests will be given weekly. These will focus on the timetable we are covering in class that week and any we have previously covered.
Spellings will go home on Fridays and tests will be held the following Friday, although it will no longer be a dictation style of test. Children will also have an extra opportunity to practice their spellings during early morning work.
For Maths, you will receive the parent booklet outlining what activities can help your child at home. In addition, we are introducing a new way to approach our Maths homework called ‘Mathletics’. This is a internet based resource and more details will follow once we have it up and running.
For English and the wider curriculum, we will be using a homework grid with a point incentive which your child is expected to complete during term 1 and hand in. It will be checked weekly and the final date for it to be completed is Thursday 20th October.
Please can you ensure that bags and general belongings are kept to a minimum as we have even less cloakroom space than before!
You may be aware that junior children no longer have contact books. However, your communication is still essential and I would encourage you to contact me as you need to.
Please ensure your child has a full water bottle in school everyday and comes in wearing the correct uniform and is also on time for school.
If you would like to offer to be a volunteer reader in Cedar Class please come and see me. Thank you for your support!
